Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to your well-being. Sleep is part of the body’s repair cycle and helps maintain your physical and mental health. Sleep deprivation is a risk factor for developing obesity, high blood pressure, heart and kidney diseases, diabetes and stroke. It affects your mood and emotional resilience, and is a risk factor for depression.

How much sleep do I need?

The amount varies from person to person. Quality is as important as quantity. You might sleep eight hours a night, but never get into a restorative level, and so wake up feeling tired. Alternatively, you might have five hours of deep, undisturbed rest and wake up feeling refreshed. You will know when you’ve had enough because you will wake up feeling rested before your alarm goes off.

Timing is also important. Some people are natural night owls, while others are morning larks. Unfortunately, working hours, particularly for shift workers, don’t always allow you to go to bed at times your body prefers.

Once you get into a pattern of not sleeping, it can be difficult to break on your own. Therapy under hypnosis (hypnotherapy) can help you create or restore healthy sleeping habits. If you are struggling, don’t be afraid to ask for help and see the difference getting a good night’s rest can make to your quality of life.
